Portego Alcova pieces are not intended to be merely functional. I am interested in how a piece occupies a space and how people experience it, how they move around it, approach it, pass it, or interact with it.

The material I use is a way of creating this experience. Steel gives the work its weight, scale and physical presence, while its shape and placement determine how the surrounding space is experienced. For me, the piece is therefore not only the object itself, but also the space it creates around it and the way people experience that space.

The process of making each piece is an important part of my practice. I approach the making as a personal challenge: taking a work from its initial idea to its final form by myself, confronting every stage of the process directly and without relying on external help.

This solitude is not a limitation I am trying to overcome. It has become a source of strength. The physical effort, repetition, uncertainty and problems encountered during the making become part -and define- the work itself. Each piece is therefore not only an object or a physical environment, but also the result of a process of endurance, confrontation and self-reliance.

The challenge is not simply to make the work, but to see how far I can push myself through the process of making it.

This set of two pieces it’s created for -and the support of- Stahl Band and their new space in Puglia.
